A little history

The Colonnes de Buren, also known as the Deux Plateaux, is a 1986 art installation by Daniel Buren situated in the courtyard of the Palais-Royal, near the Comédie-Française. The 3,000m2 work is made of both Carrara marble and Pyrenean marble, materials considered the most noble for use in sculpture (Michelangelo and Rodin were both fervent enthusiasts). The installation comprises 260 candy-striped black and white columns aligned in a conceptual grid pattern and rising above the ground to various heights, creating an original and intriguing visual effect.

 

A stroll in the garden of the Palais Royal

After seeing the Colonnes de Buren, why not continue your visit amidst the picturesque verdure of the Jardin du Palais Royal? This tree-lined green space is surrounded by four galleries sheltered by arcades: the Galerie de Montpensier to the west, the Galerie de Beaujolais to the north, the Galerie de Valois to the east and the Galerie du Jardin to the south. In its centre stands a circular fountain where it’s a pleasure to stop for a read, chat, or simply to relish the exquisite architecture of the surrounding buildings. An ideal place to stroll in summer and winter, it’s just a few minutes from the Hotel du Continent.
