A marvel of architecture

The Place Vendôme is also a unique witness to French history. Built by Louis XIV as a monument to the glory of his power, it was added to by Napoleon, who erected the column to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. This same column, seen as a symbol of oppression, was destroyed by the Communards. However, time has not touched the majestic facades of the superb mansions creating this perfect octagon, a superb example of French classicism.
